IBM’s involvement with Wimbledon has gone from strength to strength over the 24 years of their association. As a showcase for how IBM can collect, collate, analyse and present huge amounts of data in real time, IBM’s services for Wimbledon are unparalleled.
In this video, key IBM staff explain how reams of data are collected by a 50-strong team of junior tennis professionals, who log the key aspects of every point. All this data flows into the Operations Bunker, where it is combined with historical data to provide the Wimbledon Information System for broadcasters. New this year has been the iPad app, which joins Wimbledon’s other digital platforms to provide an even richer information experience for fans. Central to the digital experience is IBM SlamTracker, which offers ‘Keys to the Match’ – showing the main performance factors that a player needs to achieve in order to win the contest. This year, IBM is also tracking social media and analysing positive sentiment for each player. To illustrate this wealth of data, IBM has been using 3D printers to create a trophy for each player who tops the performance and social media rankings. IBM’s cloud services help fulfil the demand for all this information, with the ability to expand and contract provision as required.
